Support Services

There are several support services available for First Nations Peoples that are designed and run by First Nations people to provide the best service they can.

National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) is the national leadership body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health in Australia. They represent the 145 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations across the country and maintain a philosophy of Aboriginal community control and the holistic view of health. Addressing the ill health and wellbeing of First Nations peoples can only be achieved by local Aboriginal people controlling health care delivery. 13YARN is the first national crisis support line for mob who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping. They offer a confidential one-on-one yarning opportunity with a Lifeline-trained Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter who can provide crisis support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 13YARN empowers our community with the opportunity to yarn without judgement and provide a culturally safe space to speak about their needs, worries or concerns.

Headspace: Yarn Safe is the first youth led national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health campaign of its kind. It was developed in September 2014 with the help of 12 incredible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people from across Australia, who have continued to be involved in the campaign development.

HeadToHealth offers tips and links for First Nations peoples, to help themselves and to help their mob. They can also help explore different options for seeking out mental or physical health support, such as linking to a GP, medical practise or a counselling service.

The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that partners with communities to address the ongoing trauma of the Stolen Generations and caused by actions like the forced removal of children from their families.

Beyond Blue has brought together a list of helpful contacts for First Nations peoples, including services that are specific to each state.

Health Direct has produced an article on mental health specifically for First Nations peoples, explaining social and emotional well-being and the factors that can affect it.
